The authors hypothesized that a particular family of serine proteases (the chymases) evolved from a common ancestral gene. Employing a heuristic parsimony algorithm, the authors ascertained the sequence of the ancestral protein. The protein was then synthesized and its enzymatic properties were found to differ from those of some modern chymases. It was concluded that the difference in properties was a result of evolutionary pressure.
